Cheltenham’s televised New Year’s Day meeting, featuring the Relkeel Hurdle and Dipper Novices’ Chase, is in jeopardy with part of the track waterlogged.

Clerk of the course Simon Claisse said: ‘The course is very wet. We will need to see a significant improvement between now and Friday.

We will make a decision tomorrow about an inspection.

Cheltenham’s televised New Year’s Day meeting is under threat due to torrential rain

‘The meeting is currently in jeopardy. We have had 110mm of rain in the last 14 or 15 days, 70mm of that since Wednesday.

‘It is a phenomenal amount of rain with a lot of local flooding.

‘We would like to be looking at a dry forecast but we haven’t got that.’

Tuesday’s meetings at Newbury and Kelso must survive inspections this morning with frost a threat.

Wednesday’s meeting at Haydock has already been called off because of four inches of snow on Sunday night and heavy rain is forecast while waterlogging has scuppered Thursday’s card at Uttoxeter.

To fill the latter’s loss, the BHA have scheduled an all-weather Flat meeting at Newcastle.
